Tommy Makabu each finished with over 20 points but the Quakers were not able to match the 53-point effort from host Rose-Hulman in the second half as Earlham fell to the Fightin' Engineers, 83-61, on Friday evening at Hulbert Arena.
Barnes tallied 22 points on 9-of-24 shooting from the field, and grabbed a team-high six rebound. Makabu netted 21 points on a 9-of-13 shooting performance.
Earlham trailed Rose-Hulman by just one point, 30-29, at the half, after shooting 48.2 percent (13-of-27) in the opening stanza while holding the Engineers to a 35.3 percent shooting. The Quakers stayed on the Engineers' heels early in the second stanza, and held a 42-41 lead over Rose-Hulman at the 15:02 mark following a Makabu 3-pointer.
Momentum swung in Rose-Hulman's favor as the second half unfolded. The Engineers connected at a 72.4 percent (21-of-29) clip over the final 20 minutes, with a 15-2 run lasting nearly six minutes through the middle of the second half proving decisive.
Rose-Hulman had three players in double-digits, led by Isaac Farnsworth with 11 points and six boards. Samvit Ram and Max Chaplin each chipped in with 11 points, while Craig McGee dished out five assists.
The Fightin' Engineers outrebounded the Quakers 40 to 20, including a 15-5 advantage on the offensive glass that translated to 22 (+15) second-chance points.
Earlham men's basketball closes out the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 21, when it hosts Rose-Hulman at the Druley Performance Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Spectators are not permitted.
