TERRE HAUTE, Indiana – Earlham College women's basketball dominated Rose-Hulman over the first 10 minutes then maintained its pressure on the Fightin' Engineers at both ends of the floor on its way to a 55-43 wire-to-wire victory over Rose-Hulman on Friday night at Hulbert Arena.
The win was the first for Earlham women's basketball at Rose-Hulman since the 2013-14 season, but the Quakers' second triumph over the Engineers over the last three meetings.
Kayla Bowling paced Earlham offensively with 20 points on 7-of-20 shooting from the field including four 3-pointers. First year
Emma Craig cracked double-digits for the first time in her collegiate career with 10 points on a 5-of-8 effort from the floor.
Earlham shot a season-best 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field while holding Rose-Hulman to 31.6 percent (12-of-38) shooting.
Rosie Newhart led Earlham on the glass with seven rebounds, part of the Quakers' tally of 28 boards.
Earlham held Rose-Hulman to just one field in the first quarter while surging ahead on an 11-0 run, which left the Quakers with a 17-4 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Marissa Quiroz netted six points in the opening stanza, while Newhart chipped in four points and
Acacia Tenette and
Neely Trenshaw each added two points. Bowling drained her first 3-pointer of the night in the quarter's final minute.
The Quakers held a double-digit lead through most of the second quarter, with a Bowling layup in the waning seconds of the frame giving Earlham a 26-12 lead at the intermission. Earlham kept pace with Rose-Hulman in the second half, and responded to a challenge from the Engineers in the third quarter when Rose-Hulman got to within seven of the Quakers. Earlham answered with a pair of
Aubrey Hollander free throws and another Bowling trey, quickly extending the Quaker lead back to double figures.
Nola Wilson led Rose-Hulman with 18 points while Jordan Barlow added 10 points. The Fightin' Engineers committed 23 turnovers, resulting in 24 points off turnovers for the Quakers. Earlham fared far better in the ball control department, committing just 12 giveaways.
Earlham women's basketball closes out its regular season on Sunday, Feb. 21, when the Quakers host Rose-Hulman at Druley Performance Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Spectators are not permitted.
