Baseball climbs the HCAC standings with a sweep against Mount St. Joseph

SCORES: G1 – Earlham 8, Mount St. Joseph 3 / G2 – Earlham 5, Mount St. Joseph 2
LOCATION: Richmond, Indiana – Randal R. Sadler Stadium
RECORDS: Earlham 15-7 / Mount St. Joseph 8-14

RICHMOND, Indiana – Earlham College and Mount St. Joseph had to endure a nearly two-hour lightning delay to complete their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday night at Sadler Stadium, but when both games were complete the Quakers emerged with a sweep over the Lions. Earlham notched an 8-3 victory over MSJ in game one, before surviving the delay in a 5-2 triumph in game two.

GAME 1
Danny Dopp belted a solo home run in the top of the third inning to put Earlham in front, 3-2.

The round-tripper was Dopp's second of the season. The Quakers plated three more runs in the sixth inning - all through a fielding error on the Mount St. Joseph right fielder - that extended Earlham's lead to 6-2.

Mount St. Joseph got one of those runs back in the bottom of the eighth inning when Patrick Murray's RBI single to left-center plated Tyrell Anderson.

A pair of base hits in the ninth inning from Dopp and Austin Hatfield drove in Connor Drews and Jason Grace, giving Earlham an 8-3 lead.

Earlham starter Joey Gerbus fanned nine MSJ batters and scattered six hits over seven-and-a-third innings on the mound to improve to 4-0. Jacob Renner came on to close out the game and pitched one-and-a-third innings of no-hit ball with three strikeouts.

Dopp finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with one run and two runs batted in. Isaiah Shake and Christian Lancianese each had two hits.

GAME 2
Earlham broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the 5th when Connor Drews got aboard on a single and scored on Dopp's two-out triple to right-center, putting the Quakers in front, 2-1.

The Quakers tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth. Isaiah Shake reached on an error and crossed on a Christian Lancianese double down the left field line. Marc Gendreau singled home Lancianese later in the frame with a shot to center field, extending Earlham's lead to 4-1.

Mount St. Joseph plated a single run in the bottom of the inning when a balk allowed Matt Brankamp to score to cut the margin to 4-2. Brankamp reached on a base hit to left field earlier in the inning.

Earlham got the run back in the top of the ninth on Brian Pincura's solo shot over the "Maroon Monster" in left field for his third home run of the season.

Nick Carrizales started on the mound and lasted six innings on his way to the win, recording four strikeouts and scattering three hits. Domanick Michael picked up the save after coming on in relief of Chance Strickley, who pitched the seventh and eighth innings for the Quakers.

NEXT UP:
