Volleyball downs Illinois Wesleyan and Monmouth in four sets on double-header Saturday

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Earlham College volleyball team bounced back from a loss on Friday to post two victories at the Illinois Wesleyan Holiday Inn Express Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Earlham opened the day by beating the host school 17-25, 25-28, 25-16, 25-21. Now 5-3 after the match with the Quakers, Illinois Wesleyan received votes in the latest national poll.

In their second contest of the day, the Quakers got past Monmouth College 25-9, 21-25, 25-14, 25-12. Monmouth is now 5-4.

"We made adjustments that lead to better execution all around," Earlham Head Coach Lauren Horton said. "The team was energetic and hungry."

Maria Young represented Earlham on the all-tournament team for the weekend. The other members of the team were Amber Juarez of Illinois Wesleyan, Taylor Baxter and Emma Strozewski of Ohio Northern University, Katie Wood and Allie Fults of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Young led the Quakers with 14 kills and a pair of aces against Illinois Wesleyan, while Giselle Mora added 10 kills.

Erin Wagner finished with 35 assists and two aces.

Defensively, Jennifer Shamel topped Earlham with 17 digs. Caroline Mulvihill had three blocks and 10 digs. Wagner added 11 digs.

Against Monmouth, Mora and Olivia Kyrk led the way with 14 kills. Sarah Dickman contributed 12 kills.

Wagner finished with 52 assists and three aces. Young had four blocks.

Shamel had 25 digs, while Akiko Tajima and Mulvihill added 13 each.

The Quakers (5-3) are back on the court against Wilmington College on Tuesday, Sept. 14. The non-conference contest is in the Druley Performance Gym at 7 p.m.
