Volleyball finishes 2-1 at Wittenberg Fall Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - A five-set battle ended in a loss for the Earlham College volleyball team on Saturday, Sept. 18.

The Quakers won the opener of the day in the Wittenberg University Fall Classic by defeating Alma College 25-19, 25-21, 25-21.

After winning their fifth straight match, the Quakers took on the host Tigers as Wittenberg had to come back to post a 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-10 victory.

Earlham is now 8-4, while Alma was 0-5 after falling to the Quakers. Wittenberg is 7-4.

Maria Young topped the Quakers with 18 kills against Wittenberg, while Sarah Dickman added 15 and Giselle Mora finished with 14.

Erin Wagner had 50 assists. It is the fourth time this season that the Earlham setter has reached at least 50 assists in a match.

Young and Mora both had three service aces.

Jennifer Shamel was just ahead of several Earlham teammates with 17 digs as Caroline Mulvihill (14), Akiki Tajima (14), Wagner (12) and Mallory Cox (12) also reached double digits in the category.

Olivia Kyrk led the Quakers with three blocks as she added nine kills.

Against Alma, the Quakers scored nine straight points in the first set on the way to a 16-2 advantage to establish the tone for the affair.

Dickman led the Quakers with 11 kills, while Kyrk finished with 10 and Young contributed nine.

Wagner had 23 assists with three service aces.

Shamel had 14 digs with Tajima finishing with 11 as matched Wagner with three aces.

Skyler Murray added a dozen assists and Mulvihill had three blocks.

Earlham visits DePauw University on Tuesday, Sept. 21. The non-conference contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.
