GREENCASTLE, Ind. - It didn't take head field hockey coach
Nicole Volgraf long to earn her first career win. The Quakers traveled to DePauw University on Wednesday, Sept. 1 to start their 2021 campaign and left victorious with a narrow 2-1 win.
Earlham surrendered a goal early in the contest when DePauw's Allison Quackenbush scored at 8:00.
Trailing by a goal in the North Coast Athletic Conference affair, the Quakers tied it at 1-1 when
Meredith McGraw scored off of a penalty stroke at 24:22 in the second period.
What turned out to be the game-winner for Earlham came moments later at the 28:26 mark as
Sydney Schmitt scored from a scrum in front of the DePauw goal.
Earlham made things difficult for the DePauw defense with constant pressure and outshooting their opponents 11 to 4 with 10 of the shots being on goal. Earlham goalie
Meg Murphy saved 1 of the 2 shots on goal she faced during the contest. Earlham also led 9-6 in penalty corners.
The Quakers (1-0) play their home opener against Concordia University of Wisconsin on Saturday, Sept. 4. The non-conference match at Darrell Beane Stadium starts at noon.
