NORTH MANCHESTER – The Earlham College men's basketball team scored a second consecutive win in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference competition with a 73-71 win over Manchester University on Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers improved to 5-8 (2-5 HCAC) while the Spartans fell to 7-10 (6-4 HCAC).
Four players for Earlham reached double-digit points in the effort.
Anthony Phillips led the Quakers with 19 points, four steals and four assists on the afternoon.
Tommy Makabu followed his 25 point performance on Wednesday with 15 points, while
Kolden Vanlandingham scored 13 and collected a team-high eight boards.
After trailing 12-5 seven minutes into the contest, Manchester scored a 10-0 run kickstarted by consecutive 3-pointers to take the lead. The Spartans led by as many as 10 points in the first half before a late surge from Earlham brought the score to 34-30 heading into the break.
The Quakers started the second half with a 9-2 run over the opening three minutes to lead 39-36. Earlham stretched to a lead of 47-41 with 14:28 remaining on the clock, and the Spartans spent the next 10 minutes recovering their deficit.
With 3:42 remaining, Manchester tied the score at 67 off of a 3-pointer. The team's exchanged jumpers and were tied at 69 with 1:34 remaining.
A foul by Chase Yonts led to two free throws for the Spartans and Yonts recovered with a layup to equal the score with 55 seconds left.
Makabu recorded a steal on the following Manchester possession and collected the rebound after a missed 3-pointer. Vanlandingham hit the winning layup with 2.8 seconds remaining to give Earlham the lead and the eventual win.
The Quakers travel to Bluffton University on Monday for a makeup game with the Beavers starting at 7 pm. Earlham then returns to Druley Performance Gym to host Franklin College with a 7:30 pm tip-off time.
