BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Earlham College men's basketball team scored a third straight victory in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference competition after
Jaden Terry nailed a 3-point shot with two seconds remaining.
The Quakers improved to 6-8 (2-5 HCAC) while the Beavers fell to 5-10 (1-6 HCAC).
Kolden Vanlandingham led the offense with 21 points while Terry tallied 20. The duo also combined for 10 rebounds and two steals.
The first half saw the score tied five times and the largest lead was five points in favor of Earlham with 1:21 remaining in the period. The Quakers shot 43% from the floor while holding the Beavers to just 30% in the opening half as the teams went to the break with Earlham leading 25-24.
The squads stayed close in the second half as well, With eight tied scores, the largest margin of the half was a 55-49 score with 4:44 on the clock and Earlham leading. The Beavers recovered to tie the score just over a minute later after two consecutive 3-pointers.
After an offensive foul on Earlham and a timeout, the Beavers scored a layup to lead 57-55 with 2:55 remaining.
It took nearly 90 seconds before the score changed again with both sides missing opportunities on offense to take a lead. With 29 seconds remaining, Bluffton hit a jumper to go up 59-55.
The Quakers countered with a jumper from
Tommy Makabu to trail 59-57 with 17 seconds left.
The Beavers took possession and were attacking the net before a bad pass out of bounds caused a turnover with 11 seconds on the clock.
Earlham made a substitution while play was stopped for a clock issue. The in-bound went to Terry who made space for himself along the top of the 3-point line and set up for a shot from distance.
The Beavers had two seconds to make a final shot attempt but missed the mark.
Earlham will be back in Druley Performance Gym on Wednesday to host Franklin College at 7:30 pm.
