LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Earlham College volleyball team was swept by conference-leading Transylvania University in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening.
The Quakers fell to 9-11 (2-2 HCAC) while the Pioneers improved to 16-5 (4-0 HCAC).
Maria Young scored 13 kills with a .184 percentage and had one block on the evening.
Erin Wagner dished out 28 assists and had one ace and block respectively.
Transy controlled the first set from the onset and jumped out to a 16-4 lead before sailing to a set win. The Pioneers recorded 19 kills with only two errors in the opening frame. The Quakers were efficient in the opening set with only three errors, but only scored 12 kills while trying to keep up with the Transylvania offense.
Errors hit the Quakers in set two as they had eight of them for a 0 attack percentage in the frame. Earlham led early in the set before a 9-2 run from the hosts brought the score to 15-10. After a run of four consecutive points for the Pioneers, Earlham scored a 4-1 run.
Earlham jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the final set, but the Pioneers closed back in and took the lead off of a 7-1 run. The Quakers responded with three consecutive kills. The offense saw life in the third frame with 11 kills and a .176 percentage as a team for Ealrham, but the Pioneers outpaced the Quakers with 17 kills for a .308 clip.
Earlham will continue its season on Saturday in Druley Performance Gym against Anderson University. First serve is slated for 7 pm in the busy Homecoming schedule.
