RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Earlham College men's lacrosse team improved to .500 on the season with a 16-0 dismantling of Concordia University Chicago on Sunday afternoon. The win is the largest goal differential for the Quakers since the program was founded in 2018.
The Quakers improved to 2-2 while the Cougars fell to 0-2.
Sam Sargent led all scorers with seven goals and two assists off of 13 shots. The sophomore also caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
Logan Reihing was the assist leader with three on the afternoon. The junior from Lexington, Ky. also hit two goals in the offensive onslaught.
Brady Shaw was physical in the circle and won 15-of-19 face offs for the Quakers.
Donovan Shea led the defense with 13 caused turnovers and 13 ground balls and one goal.
Emmitt Shaughnessy kept a clean sheet in goal, aided by zero shots on goal allowed by the defense.
Nine Quakers found the back of the net on the afternoon, three of them recorded their first career goal in Chicago.
The Quakers outshot the Cougars 51-7 and led in ground balls 35-17. Earlham was successful on eight of its 12 clear attempts and caused 20 of Concordia's 41 turnovers.
Sargent scored the first two goals of the contest with assists from
Kevin Ventura. After leading 2-0 at the end of the first frame,
Elijah Gamber started the scoring in the second quarter. Sargent and Ventura added three more before
Christian Navarez scored the seventh goal of the game with 40 seconds remaining in the half.
After a goal from Reihing in the third quarter, Shea picked up the ground ball from a Shaw faceoff win. Shea carried the ball downfield on his own and scored an unassisted goal just 20 seconds after the Reihing score. With 4:24 remaining in the third quarter, freshman
Justin Boritzki scored his first career goal. Shea once again picked up the ground ball from the faceoff and carried it down for a shot. This time, his shot was saved by Concordia, but Sargent collected the rebound and put away the goal for Earlham.
Leading 12-0 heading into the final quarter, freshmen defenders
Jacob Bandfield and
Conor Coil also recorded the first goals of their young careers.
The Quakers will return to Darrell Beane Stadium to host DePauw University on Wednesday at 7 pm.
