WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Earlham College men's lacrosse team fell in its season opener to Wilmington College 9-7 in the Quaker Bowl.
Earlham begins its season 0-1 while Wilmington improves to 2-1.
Sam Sargent led the Quake in scoring with three goals off of 12 shots.
Elijah Gamber also recorded a multi-goal game with two scores.
Emmitt Shaughnessy tallied the loss in goal with eight saves in 60 minutes in the net.
EC scored the first goal of the game in the third minute off the stick of Sargent. He got the ball behind the Wilmington net and made a move into space to create an angle for the unassisted score.
After the score, Wilmington tallied off three goals in the remainder of the first quarter.
Gambier scored his first goal of the contest with 12:51 remaining in the second quarter. The sophomore made a spin to the left side of the field and found space to drive forward before releasing a contested shot for the score.
Wilmington scored on a man-up opportunity with six minutes left in the half, and led 4-2 heading into the break.
Earlham responded with two goals in the opening six minutes of the third quarter to tie the game. Less than a minute later, Wilmington scored again to retake the lead.
Christian Navarez equaled the score at five with just under three minutes left in the quarter with help from a
Logan Reihing assist. Reihing drove in deep along the left side of the attack and laid off a pass to Navarez who was in an open pocket in the middle of the attack.
Wilmington added a goal in the final minute of the quarter, and began the fourth frame with another score.
Reihing scored a goal of his own with a long-distance shot up the middle with nine minutes remaining on the clock.
Wilmington scored two goals within 30 seconds to lead 9-6 with less than five minutes remaining.
Sargent tallied his final goal of the game with 55 seconds remaining in the contest. The Quakers were playing man-down while the goal was scored.
Earlham will continue its 2022 campaign with Heidelberg coming to Darrell Beane Stadium on Wednesday for a 7 pm game.
