Lancianese homers twice, baseball splits with Wilmington

RICHMOND – The Earlham College baseball team earned a split with Wilmington College in day one of Quaker Bowl competition.

Earlham improved to 4-1 while Wilmington fell to 6-3.

GAME ONE: Earlham 8   Wilmington 9 (11 Innings)

Christian Lancianese led the Quakers with three hits and three RBIs on five at-bats. Justin Dillhoff started the game on the mound and recorded five strikeouts in six innings pitched.

After six straight outs in the first inning, Wilmington scored off of a two-run homer in the top of the second inning and scored a third run off a single later in the frame.

Earlham scored by a walked in run in the bottom of the second before stranding three runners on base at the end of the inning.

A single from Wilmington in the top of the third inning eventually resulted in a run being added to the visiting Quaker total.

Earlham put three runners on base in the bottom on the third, but could not bring a run home.

The Fightin' Quakers scored on another home run in the top of the sixth inning, before a two-run showing in the bottom of the inning by Earlham.

A double by Andrew Bradley in the bottom of the seventh inning brought in two Earlham runs to tie the score at 5. A following double by Christian Lancianese brought in another two runs to give Earlham a 7-5 lead.

The home squad added another run in the bottom of the eighth off of a Nathan Lancianese double down the left field line.

Earlham allowed a run by a walk in the top of the ninth, and Wilmington leveled the score off of a two-run ground rule double later in the inning.

A Wilmington single in the 11th inning brought home the winning run for the visiting squad, with Earlham unable to match the score in extra innings.

GAME TWO: Earlham 19   Wilmington 6

Christian Lancianese went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs in game two of the series. Maxwell Fries also posted a perfect batting average with three hits and two RBIs in game two. Every starter in the Earlham lineup recorded at least one hit on the afternoon. Aidan Talarek started off on the mound and pitched six complete innings with five hits allowed and two strikeouts.

Lancianese began the game with a lead-off home run over the Maroon Monster in the bottom of the first inning. He recorded a second solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning, as well as a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth.

EC led 11-0 before allowing the first Wilmington run of the game in the top of the sixth inning.

The Quake then added seven more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the home squad batted around the order for the second straight inning.

Earlham will host Wilmington for a third game tomorrow at noon in Darell Beane Stadium.
