Baseball wins Quaker Bowl series

RICHMOND – The Earlham College baseball team defeated Wilmington College 12-11 on Sunday to earn a 3-2 win in the Quaker Bowl series.

The Hustlin' Quakers improved to 5-1 while the Fightin' Quakers fell to 6-3.

After watching his brother get the glory yesterday, Nathan Lancianese led the Quake bats with three hits and two RBI on four at-bats. The sophomore outfielder hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give EC a 12-9 lead heading into the final frame.

Ethan Khandaker earned the win on the mound after pitching two innings in relief and recording one strikeout. Nick Carrizales earned a save after closing down the ninth inning with one strikeout.

Wilmington walked five straight batters in the bottom of the second inning which resulted in two Earlham runs before any hits. Zach Swearingen put the ball in play to allow Easton Embry to score a third run in the inning before Christian Lancianese knocked two runs in with a double to center field.

Wilmington posted three runs after a bases-loaded walk brough one run home, and a single to the outfield from the following batter brought in two scores.

The home squad responded in the bottom of the inning with a run off of a single from Robby Shondel through the right side.

A two-RBI single from Wilmington in the top of the fourth brought the score to 6-5 with Earlham still leading. The visitors then hit a one-run home run to begin the fifth inning and tie the game at six.

After a double from Christian Lancianese to begin the bottom of the fifth, Embry hit a single to right field and got caught looking for the extra base at second. The throw to second allowed Christian to reach home on the throw and put Earlham back on top.

With two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning, Wilmington brought in a new pitcher to face Cameron McCabe at the plate. McCabe made contact for a single into right field and brought Devin Basley home for another EC score. The next batter popped out to the pitcher, stranding runners at first and third base.

The visitors scored off of a steal at home after Embry made the throw to catch the stealing runner at second base.

A triple from Reece Zonts in the bottom of the seventh inning brought in a run for Earlham, and a single from Swearingen on the following play brought Zonts home for the score to give the Quake a 10-7 lead.

Wilmington scored off of an RBI walk and a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to trail by one in the eighth frame before the Lancianese homer made the score 12-9 heading into the ninth.

Carrizales came into the game with runners on first and second base and no outs in the top of the ninth inning. His first batter hit an RBI single up the middle to bring the score to 12-10 in favor of Earlham. After a single to center field loaded the bases, Carrizales induced an infield pop-out on the next batter. Wilmington put the ball in play to right field to bring one run home. Shondel stopped the tying run from reaching home by making the throw from right field to home plate in time to stop the runner. Carrizales struck out a pinch hitter to end the inning and give Earlham the series win in the Quaker Bowl.

Earlham will be back in action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Principia in Sadler Stadium starting at 4 pm.
