Quakers defend Darrell Beane Stadium in home opener

RICHMOND – The Earlham College men's lacrosse team took a 13-8 win in its home opener for the 2022 season against Heidelberg University on Wednesday evening.

The Quakers improved to 1-2 while the Student Princes fell to 0-4.

Sam Sargent and Christian Navarez led the Quakers with four goals apiece. Sargent also contributed a game-high six assists on the evening.

Donovan Shea won eight faceoffs and played a key defensive role with a team-high six ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Emmitt Shaughnessy scored the win in goal and brought in eight saves.

Elijah Gamber began the scoring for Earlham less than three minutes into the game. Navarez recorded his first goal just 40 seconds later after a faceoff win from Shea. The Quakers scored four goals and kept the Student Princes off the board in the opening nine minutes of play.

After assisting the first three goals of the contest, Sargent tallied his first goal of the game with 4:03 remaining in the first quarter. After a second goal by Navarez, Sargent scored two more to earn a hat trick in the first half of play.

Heidelberg recorded its second goal with five minutes left in the second half. The Student Princes then added another with 1:44 left before halftime.

As time wound down before the halftime break, Sargent found Navares open for a shot, which resulted in an Earlham goal with .02 remaining before halftime. The Quakers went into the locker room with an 8-3 lead and a huge burst of momentum.

Earlham came out of the break with two goals in the opening six minutes of the half. Heidelberg showed signs of life in the third quarter and strung together three consecutive goals in the end of the third and beginning of the fourth.

Late fourth quarter goals from Kevin Ventura and Logan Reihing put the game out of reach for Heidelberg in the final five minutes of play.

Earlham will look to carry momentum into an away contest at Concordia Chicago on Saturday. The game is scheduled for 11 am central time.
