RICHMOND – The Earlham College men's soccer team drew even with Berea College on Friday afternoon in Matlack-Messer Stadium 1-1.
The Quakers move to 1-0-1 on the season.
After the draw, penalty kicks were used to determine a tournament winner for the Raven/Quaker Classic. The Quakers won on penalty kicks 4-2 with the final kick scored by
Orin Gentner.
Four Quakers were named to the all-tournament team.
Quentin Berry was named offensive MVP after leading the offense during Thursday's match. Berry recorded one assist and generated the scoring chance on bothof the other Quaker goals.
Caleb Wilgen,
Antonio Paganelli, and Gentner were also named to the all-tournament team.
After going into halftime tied at zero, Gentner put the Quakers in the lead with a goal in the 51st minute. EC got a cross from the near side across the face of the Mountaineer goal, but it was knocked away by the defense. Gentner put himself in position to take a one-touch volley shot to the far side of the net to score.
The Mountaineers responded in the 76th minute after securing a corner kick. A Berea player put his head on the cross, but was off target. A second player managed to collect the shot and take a more decisive strike past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper
Tyler Smith.
The Quakers were outshot in the contest 17-11 despite controlling the majority of midfield possession. Gentner led EC with two shots, both on goal.
Smith collected five saves in the tie.
Earlham will have a week off before facing The University of Cincinnati Clermont on Saturday September 10 in Matlack-Messer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 pm.
