RICHMOND – The Earlham College men's basketball team scored its first win of 2023 with an 85-59 score over Bluffton University on Wednesday evening. The Quakers scored 14 3-pointers as a team, and led in turnovers 20-13.
Jaden Terry recorded his second double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds. The senior also added four assists and four steals.
Anthony Phillips reached double digits with 15 points and a 3-for-6 mark from 3-point range.
Bluffton broke out to an 11-4 lead in the opening seven minutes of play. The Quakers responded with a 10-0 run, led by 3-pointers from Terry and
Casey Keesee. A 3-pointer from Terry gave EC a 21-17 lead with just under 7:30 left to play in the opening half. After leading 26-21 with 3:26 remaining, Earlham conceded a 5-0 run, and the Beavers tied the game on a jumper with a minute remaining in the half.
Earlham opened the second half with three straight 3-pointers to lead 35-26 after two minutes of action. After a bonus shot from
Tommy Makabu, the Quakers had scored a 12-2 run and led 38-28 at the 17:48 mark. Starting at the 8:20 mark, Earlham scored a 20-2 run led by Phillips. The Quakers were 9-for-12 and had five turnovers in the five-minute run. The Quakers then outscored the Beavers 9-7 in the final three minutes.
The Quakers will be back in action on Saturday to host Mount St. Joseph University as part of a doubleheader. The women's game will kick off the event at 1 pm, with the men's contest at 3 pm.
