ANDERSON, Ind. – Led by
Tommy Makabu and
James Holder, the Earlham College men's basketball team took down conference-leading Anderson University with a 70-62 final score on Saturday afternoon.
Makabu eclipsed 20 points for the third time this season, scoring 24, and collected seven rebounds. Holder scored a career-high 19 points, and brought down 13 rebounds for his first career double-double on the afternoon.
After the Quakers took a 4-0 lead in the opening 30 seconds, Anderson went on a 9-0 run to lead 9-4 at the 16:25 mark. Good defense by the Quakers brought four points off turnovers in the next minute of play to put the visitors ahead once again 10-9.
The Quakers used a 6-0 run to take a 28-17 lead with 4:46 remaining in the half, but the Ravens responded with an 11-4 run. Makabu closed the half with a jumper to give EC a 34-28 lead heading into the break.
The Quakers went on a 7-2 run to open the second half before a 14-3 run by Anderson. With the score tied at 52 at the 8:20 mark, Earlham took the lead for the final time off of a jumper from
Zachariah Andre.
The Quakers went 4-for-4 on free throws in the final minute, and held the Ravens to just two points in the final two minutes of game time.
Earlham will hit the road again on Wednesday evening to take on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm in Terre Haute, Ind. The Engineers won the first matchup of the season 77-65 in Richmond.
