CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Earlham College men's soccer team took its first win of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate with a 2-1 final score over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday evening.
The Quakers improved to 3-6-3 (1-2-1 HCAC) while the Lions fell to 2-10 (1-3 HCAC).
In the 36th minute,
Sinclair Simelane took a corner kick from the far side that was deflected in for a score by the Lions defense. Undeterred, MSJ regrouped, and scored an equalizer on a chaotic corner kick in the 40th minute.
In the 87th minute,
Andre Moriel got sent deep into Lions territory. The sophomore took a touch backward to gain control, and was tackled by the Lion goalkeeper to draw a penalty kick. As the Quaker bench huddled on the sideline,
Quentin Berry fooled the keeper with a soft shot to the lower-right corner.
Earlham outshot the Lions 17-4, and had a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks.
Tyler Smith made one save on the evening.
Berry led the offensive effort with six shots, and five on goal.
Braden Guinn also had a busy evening with five shots.
The Quakers continue the road trip on Wednesday at Bluffton University. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 pm.
