RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College men's basketball team began the Melissa Johnson/Hope Classic with a 75-74 loss to Carroll University.
Four Quakers reached double-digit points for EC.
Joffrey Nunnally scored 14 with four rebounds and a team-high seven assists.
Ken Walker scored 14 and brought in a team-high six boards. Kendall Cave scored 14 and recorded two blocks on defense.
Milan Kennedy scored 13 with one block and two rebounds.
The Quakers ended the game with an exact 50% mark in both field goals and three pointers, and an 11-for-13 mark from the free throw line.
After an 11-2 run, the Quakers led 13-7 at the 13:14 mark, the Quakers held their lead until a 3-pointer by the Pioneers at the 7:56 mark of the first half. The Pioneers scored a 21-2 run for a 34-23 lead. Carroll led 40-33 at halftime after a jumper by Nunnally with four seconds remaining.
The Quakers trailed in the opening minutes of the second half, but tied the game on a layup by Walker with 10:49 remaining. The lead changed eight times in the final 10 minutes. Trailing by five,
Jackson Rhodes hit two free throws, and Walker made a jump shot to bring the score to 73-72. With 16 seconds remaining, Walker hit another jump shot to give Earlham a 74-73 lead, but the lead was short lived as the Pioneers scored the go-ahead shot with seven seconds on the clock. On the final possession, the Quakers missed a jumper in the paint.
Earlham will round out the Melissa Johnson/Hope Invitational tomorrow against Capital University at 4 pm.
