MBB downs Lions in conference play

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Earlham College men's basketball team picked up a win in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Mount St. Joseph with a 75-67 final score on Saturday afternoon. 

Jaden Terry led the Quakers with 20 points, two rebounds and three steals. Tommy Makabu scored 19 points, and crossed the 1,000 career point threshold. Makabu also led the squad in steals with four. Joffrey Nunnally and Anthony Phillips also reached double-digits with 16 and 13 points respectively. 

James Holder and Carter Abshear led in rebounds with four each. 

The Quakers were efficient with their opportunities, and scored on 55.6% of field goal attempts for the contest. The Quakers also scored 19 points off of 19 turnovers, and recorded 20 fast break points. Earlham led the entirety of the contest, with zero lead changes. 

Earlham began action with an 11-2 run that spanned just over five minutes. The Lions responded with an 8-0 run, and trailed by just two at the 11:38 mark. Nunnally then hit a 3-pointer to kick off a 12-2 run for the Quakers, and EC ended the half on another 6-0 run to lead 38-23. 

The Lions came out of the break with a 15-2 run, and erased the early lead by Earlham. The Quakers managed to respond with a 7-0 run to lead 47-38 with 12:22 left on the clock. Leading 59-54 with just under five minutes remaining, EC scored a 6-0 run. The Quakers boasted a 69-62 lead heading into the final minute of play, and went 6-for-6 on free throws down the stretch. 

Earlham will be back in action on Tuesday at Defiance College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm.
