DEFIANCE, Ohio – In a 99-97 overtime loss at Defiance College, Earlham College senior
Jaden Terry put up a career-high 42 points with nine rebounds and five assists. Terry led the Quakers in all three categories.
The 42 point mark is the most scored by a Quaker basketball player in over 14 years. Terry fell just shy of the all-time single-game scoring record at Earlham, with Rick Thalls scoring 48 points against Taylor in 1976. Terry went 15-for-27 on field goals, and 12-for-13 from the free throw line.
Three other Quakers reached double digit points.
James Holder scored 17, and also brought down four rebounds.
Tommy Makabu and
Joffrey Nunnally both reached 16 points.
The Earlham defense held Defiance to a 31% field goal percentage in the first half as the Quakers dominated the opening minutes of play. EC held a 30-10 lead at the 7:27 mark of the first half. Defiance then scored a 15-4 run in the closing minutes of the half, and trailed 38-28 going into the break.
Trailing 53-40 at the 15 minute mark of the second half, Defiance scored a 9-3 run. With 7:54 remaining in regulation, the Quakers took their last double-digit lead of the contest with a layup by Holder. The Yellow Jackets slowly worked the score down over the next six minutes before tying the game at 83 with 1:28 left on the clock. The teams traded a field goal, and Defiance scored a pair of three throws heading into the final minute.
With the Quakers trailing by two with 21 seconds remaining, Holder converted on both his free throw attempts to send the game to overtime.
Defiance led 95-91 with 2:35 remaining in the overtime period, but after a missed layup, Terry tied the contest with just 14 seconds remaining. A foul by the Quakers with less than a second remaining gave the Yellow Jackets two free throws which were both made.
Earlham will be back in action on Friday evening for Senior Night. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm against Transylvania in Druley Performance Gym.
