RICHMOND – The Earlham College baseball team split a doubleheader with Wilmington College in the Quaker Bowl series on Saturday afternoon in Sadler Stadium.
The Quakers move to 6-4 on the 2023 season.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 3 WILMINGTON 12
Nathan Lancianese recorded three hits on four at bats in the opening game. The senior had one RBI and one run scored in the contest.
Christian Lancianese and
Max Fries both recorded two hits, with a double each.
Dillon Fischer started the game at pitcher and threw six complete innings with three earned runs.
Wilmington scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning to take the lead. The Fightin' Quakers then added three more before Earlham found home in the sixth frame.
Nathan Lancianese doubled down the left field line to bring his brother home and put EC on the board.
Michael Medley then hit an RBI single later in the inning.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 8 WILMINGTON 2
Hayden Scalf earned the winning decision for game two after starting the game and going seven innings. The freshman scored eight strikeouts with just one earned run on the day. Chance Strikley and
Jacob Renner both threw one inning of shutout baseball, and combined for three strikeouts.
Fries went 4-for-5 in game two with four RBI and two doubles.
Sean Jeffries had three hits with two runs scored and an RBI at the shortstop position.
Wilmington found home in the first inning again with an unearned run.
Scalf faced just 11 batters with six strikeouts in the opening three innings. With two runners in scoring position in the third, Fries hit a two-run double to center field to put Earlham on top in the series finale. Jeffries added to the lead with an RBI bunt in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Scalf allowed his first earned run of the game in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Wilmington. With another run heading home,
Drew Sale doubled up on a fly ball to right field by firing a rocket home to beat the runner at the plate.
In the top of the eighth, Strickley found himself in a jam with runners on second and third after a wild pitch. With the go ahead run at second, Strickley got the last out of the frame on a swinging strikeout to preserve the inning.
After Wilmington loaded the bases with an intentional walk, Fries pounded a two-run single to start the scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning. Next in the order,
Mitchell Roether cleared the bases with a triple into deep center field for two RBI.
Carter Vilevac kept the train rolling with an RBI single through the left side.
The Quakers will be back in action on Monday against Washington College in the opening game of the Florida Spring Break Trip.
