RICHMOND — The Earlham College baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Defiance College with a 4-3 win in Sadler Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Quakers improved to 17-12 with a 7-7 mark in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Justin Dillhoff started the game at pitcher and threw six innings with seven hits and one run allowed. The junior recorded seven strikeouts and allowed just five baserunners through the first five innings.
Jacob Renner threw three innings in relief, allowing five hits and two runs.
Ian Bullis led the Quakers at the plate with three hits for two RBI on the afternoon. Pinch hitting in the ninth inning,
Max Stewart had the walk-off RBI on an infield hit.
Bullis recorded his first RBI in the bottom of the second inning after hitting a double to the Maroon Monster down the left side line.
Max Fries scored on the play, going from second to home.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Nathan Lancianese put down a bunt for a single to the pitcher.
Mac Moore reached third on the bunt, and came home on the play after a throwing error. Later in the frame, Bullis hit a sac fly to bring
Christian Lancianese home for a 3-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning with five hits in the frame.
The Quakers loaded the bases without any outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, where Stewart put a ball in play to the Defiance shortstop. The fielder tried to get the out at home, but
Noah Collins reached the plate for the walk-off Quaker win as a pinch runner.
The Quakers will be back in action on Tuesday at Wabash College for a 4 pm first pitch. Earlham will then continue its conference season at MSJ on Saturday.
