Baseball drops midweek matchup at Wabash

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team dropped a midweek contest at Wabash College 14-13 on Tuesday evening. 

The Quakers fell to 17-13 on the season. 

In the midst of the conference schedule, the Quakers opted to not overwork an arm on the mound, and used eight pitchers on the evening. Cason Bennett got the start, with 1.2 innings pitched. The freshman recorded two strikeouts, and allowed three hits. Nate Hemmerich went the longest for EC with two innings. The grad student allowed one run on two hits. 

The Quaker bats were active on the day with 18 hits, five doubles, one triple, and two homers. Nathan Lancianese led the Quakers with three hits, two runs, three RBI, and a homer down the left field line. Mac Moore had four hits on the day, and two RBI as the leadoff batter. Christian Lancianese recorded three RBI on two hits, but the second baseman was stranded on base three times. 

The Quakers took the lead in the top of the first inning with an outfield single by Max Fries, but Wabash countered in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly. 

Reece Zonts homered in the top of the second inning, and Christian Lancianese hit a two-run double to put the Quakers back on top. 

Trailing 4-1, the Little Giants put up three runs in the bottom of the second inning. They then scored on an RBI double in the fourth frame. 

Fries recorded an RBI triple in the top of the fifth inning, and he was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Max Stewart

Wabash plated eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, 

Trailing 13-6, Nathan Lancianese knocked his three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Quakers scored two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Quakers got just one baserunner in the ninth frame. 

Earlham will continue its conference season on Saturday at Mount St. Joseph University. First pitch is slated for noon.
