BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Earlham College baseball team was swept by Bluffton on Saturday with a combined margin of just three runs on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 6 BLUFFTON 7
Hayden Scalf threw seven innings in game one, holding the Beavers to five hits and three earned runs in the outing. The freshman recorded seven strikeouts, and used 108 pitches.
Nick Carrizales tossed 1.1 innings with five hits and four runs to end the contest.
Sean Jeffries led the Quakers at the plate with one hit and two RBI on a double in the fifth inning.
Ian Bullis had two hits with one RBI and one run scored.
The Beavers took the lead off of a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning. Earlham came back and took the lead in the top of the fifth frame with four runs scored on three RBI-hits.
Bluffton tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning after hitting a two-run homer, and scoring on a fielder's choice.
The Quakers took another lead in the top of the final inning with two runs scored before the Beavers plated three runs in the bottom of the frame.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 3 BLUFFTON 5
Justin Dillhoff started the second game of the day with six innings pitched. The junior allowed seven hits for four earned runs while striking out seven.
Matt Morris threw two innings in relief with just one hit allowed.
Easton Embry had three hits in the game for his second multi-hit game of the season.
Nathan Lancianese recorded two hits in the contest, and scored one run.
The Beavers scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly. They then added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the top of the eighth inning,
Mitchell Roether hit an RBI single to start what would be a three-run inning for the Quakers.
Max Stewart also hit an RBI single in the frame, and
Drew Sale recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice.
The Quakers will be back in action next weekend in Sadler Stadium to host Hanover College. First pitch is slated for 1 pm in Saturday's doubleheader.
