Women's basketball wins season-opener

GAMBIER, Ohio – For the second straight season, the Earlham College women's basketball team began its season with a win taking a 55-48 victory at Kenyon College on Saturday. 

Jay Bright scored a team-high 13 points, with seven rebounds and a team-high five steals. Berkley Shelton led the squad in rebounds with eight, and reached double-digit points for the third time in her career. 

Shooting 8-of-14 on field goals in the first quarter, Ealrham opened the game with an 18-2 lead after seven minutes. The Quakers led 21-14 after the frame. 

The lead improved further in the second quarter, with an 11-4 run that spanned just over five minutes. Earlham opened its largest lead of the game with just under four minutes left to play in the third quarter, with a 42-25 score following an 8-2 run. Kenyon countered with seven straight points, but Bright scored twice off of a pair of turnovers in the final 20 seconds of the quarter. 

Trailing 38-51 with 4:20 remaining in the game, Kenyon scored seven straight points to bring the gap down.

The Quakers will be back in action on Thursday for the Quaker Bowl at Wilmington College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm. The EC home-opener is set for November 16 against Kuyper College at 3 pm.
