Baseball scores 20 in four-hour win over Washington

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Earlham College baseball team finished off its Florida spring trip with a 20-17 win over Washington College on Thursday. With a 10 am start time, the contest lasted nearly four hours in the Florida heat. 

Dillon Fischer started the game on the mound and tossed two innings with four strikeouts. Hans Carter then threw three innings with four strikeouts and one earned run. David Lally closed the game out with four innings, two hits, one earned run and two strikeouts. 

Jonathan Jimenez went 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI, three runs and his first career homer. Phoenix Guzzi went 3-for-6 with four RBI and one run scored. Ian Bullis hit 3-for-7 with three RBI, three runs scored, a double and a stolen base. 

The Quakers scored four runs in the first inning, and six runs in the second to lead 10-1 after two complete innings of play. Jimenez and Guzzi combined for four RBI in the third inning to give EC a 14-1 lead. 

The Shoremen then plated 12 runs in the bottom of the third after 10 hits and three defensive errors. Washington also left the bases loaded with a flyout to end the frame. 

Leading 14-13, Earlham banked two runs in the top of the fourth off of a single by Max Fries

Washington scored once in the bottom of the fourth inning, and tied the game at 16 in the bottom of the fifth. 

Tied at 16, Earlham scored four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning. Washington scored its final run in the bottom of the frame. 

The Quakers will return home over the weekend, and begin conference play at Bluffton University next weekend with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 pm on March 23rd.
