Softball mounts sixth-inning comeback against Juniata

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Earlham College softball team continued play at THE Spring Games 2024 with two losses on Thursday. 

GAME ONE: EARLHAM 6 JUNIATA 7

Morgan Cooksey started in the circle for game one with 4.1 innings pitched, eight hits, four runs and four strikeouts. Michaela King came in to finish the fifth inning, and Tatum Rickert closed the game out with two strikeouts in two innings. 

Emmerie Stump went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Ashley Lewis recorded two hits with a double and two runs scored. 

Keely Hubbard scored a leadoff single for the Quakers, and was brought home on an outfield double by Bo Shelton

After plating one run in the fifth inning, Juniata loaded the bases for a three-run triple deep down the right field line. The Eagles plated one more run in the inning on a sacrifice fly. 

Juniata scored on an outfield single in the sixth inning. Rickert joined the action with the bases loaded in the frame, and retired three batters with only a walk and a sacrifice fly allowed. 

The Quakers mounted a comeback effort in the bottom of the sixth inning, with four runs on six hits. Three of the first four Quaker batters in the frame hit outfield singles, and Hubbard drove in the first run. Ariel Clarkston then hit an RBI single to third base. With two outs and runners on second and third base, Stump hit a single to right field to bring both Quakers home to trail 7-5.

Earlham then loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but only scored one run.

GAME TWO: EARLHAM 0 MACALESTER 6

Rickert pitched a complete six innings in game two with three earned runs and six strikeouts. Bella Schatko led the Quakers in hitting in game two with two hits. 

The Quakers will close out the trip tomorrow with two matchups at Sleepy Hollow. Earlham is scheduled to take on Knox College at 10:30 am, and Nichols College at 3:00 pm.
