RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team fell 7-6 in the series opener with Hanover College on Friday evening in Sadler Stadium.
Hayden Scalf threw seven innings of four-hit baseball with just one earned run and six strikeouts. Scarf led the game with a 2-1 lead at the start of the eighth inning.
On offense, Mitchel Roether went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBI.
Max Fries recorded two hits and scored twice.
Mac Moore went 1-for-1 off the bench with a double.
The Quakers went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning with two hits in the frame.
Sean Jeffries earned a leadoff walk, and stole second base. He then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Jonathan Jimenez, and scored on a single by Fries. Roether then sent Fries to third on a ground rule double, and Guzzi earned the RBI on an infield groundout.
Hanover hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning on the third hit of the night for the Panthers. With three hits and an error, Hanover scored three more runs in the top of the eighth frame.
Fries led off the bottom of the eighth with an outfield single, and Roether brought him home on a home run over the Maroon Monster in left field.
Tied 4-4, Hanover hit three solo homers to begin the ninth inning.
Trailing 7-4, the Quakers put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
Nate Whetstine scored on a wild pitch, and Guzzi recorded an RBI on an infield single thanks to the speed of
Cameron Powell as a pinch runner. The Panthers ended the rally with a strikeout.
Earlham will get two chances at the Panthers tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm in Sadler Stadium.
