Baseball breezes past Berea

BEREA, Ky. – The Earlham College baseball team opened its weekend series at Berea with an 11-2 win on Friday evening.

Hayden Scalf pitched a shutout into the ninth inning, tallying 8.1 innings with two earned runs off six hits in the win. Braeden Lewis recorded the final two outs, with one strikeout and one hit.

Offensively, Mitchell Roether went 3-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI. Dylan Rieck blasted a home run, with two RBI and one run scored. Noah Wagster hit a double, scored two runs, and stole two bases.

Wagster took a free base in the second inning after being hit by a pitch, and proceeded to steal second and third base during the next at-bat. With two outs, Ian Bullis put the Quakers on top with a single through the left side.

Earlham got action again in the fourth inning. Roether reached with a leadoff walk, and scored on a two-out homer by Rieck to center field. The Quakers got a free base for the leadoff hitter again in the fifth inning, and Noah Rosato capitalized with a two-run double to left-center for a 5-0 Quaker lead.

Wagster led off the sixth inning with a double to left field, and advanced to third on a failed pickoff by the Mountaineers. He scored on a passed ball, and the Quakers loaded the bases on walks, but were kept from doing any further damage.

One hit and three walks led to two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Jonathan Jimenez capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. Earlham then added three runs on two hits and three walks in the top of the ninth.

Trailing 11-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Berea put a pair of runners on base for an RBI-single through the left side on a sharply hit ball near the shortstop. After the runs, Lewis allowed just one hit while closing out the win.

Earlham plays a doubleheader at the Mountaineers tomorrow beginning at 12 pm.
