Baseball sweeps Berea, outscores Mountaineers 54-15

BEREA, Ky. – The Earlham College baseball team completed a sweep of Berea College with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at the Mountaineers. The Quakers outscored Berea 54-15 in the series. 

GAME ONE: EARLHAM 34 BEREA 8 (7 Innings)

Kyle Jeffries got the start in Saturday's opener, and threw six innings with two earned runs off nine hits. The sophomore fanned five in the win. Jack Briney tallied one inning with one hit allowed. 

Offensively, Earlham totalled 23 hits, including a two-run homer by Tucker Williams. Noah Wagster went 5-6 with four RBI, three runs scored and a double. Reece Zonts went 4-5 with three RBI, four runs scored and a double. Noah Rosato hit two doubles, and recorded three RBI with three runs scored. Mitchell Roether found home plate five times on the day, with two hits and two RBI. 

Zonts and Rosato hit a pair of doubles in the first inning to put the Quakers on top 1-0 in a preview of things to come. Trailing 2-1, the Quakers scored two runs on three hits in the second inning, and four runs on three hits in the third inning.

The Mountaineers put two free runners on base to begin the fourth inning, and Dylan Rieck capitalized with a two-run single to center field. The Quakers scored nine runs in the frame, including a two-run single by Zonts, and three straight RBI-walks. 

The Quakers scored 12 runs from seven hits in the fifth inning, taking a 28-8 lead over Berea in the inning. 17 Quakers stepped up to the plate in the inning. Brendon Gibson plated two runs on an outfield single, and scored on a single by Rieck. 

The Quakers capped off their scoring with a six-run sixth inning. Earlham tallied three hits, including a two-run homer by Williams and an RBI-single by Wagster. 

GAME TWO: EARLHAM 9 BEREA 5

Casey Blevins went four innings in the win, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Garret Odey threw five innings in relief with five strikeouts and one earned run. 

Offensively, Ian Bullis went 2-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Roether scored two hits, including a home run, with two RBI and one run scored. 

After Jonathan Jimenez earned a free base as a leadoff batter, Rosato batted an RBI-double to right center for a 1-0 Quaker lead. Earlham jumped out in the third inning with four runs on four hits in the frame. Zonts opened the inning with a walk, and scored on a two-out double by Mac Moore. Bullis brought in two more runs with an outfield single, and Max Firestine hit an infield single for a 5-0 lead. 

Earlham scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, and plated two runs on three hits in the fifth. Berea hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to close the score to 8-4, before Roether hit a solo shot in the eighth inning. 

The Quakers have a midweek road game at Asbury University on Wednesday, and continue HCAC action at home against Bluffton University with a three-game series next weekend.
