Baseball starts Florida trip with 12-inning battle

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Earlham College baseball team battled Heidelberg University in 12 innings on Saturday morning to begin its Spring Break trip to Florida. 

Hayden Scalf threw six innings to start off the day with three strikeouts, and one earned run on five hits. Garret Odey was credited with the loss after tossing four innings with eight hits, five strikeouts, and one unearned run. 

Offensively, Mitchell Roether went 3-6 with two RBI and one run scored. Reece Zonts went 2-5 with a walk. Ian Bullis and Quin Adelson also recorded multi-hit performances. 

The Student Princes plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning after two errors by the Quaker defense, Heidelberg added another run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. 

After securing the first hit of the game for the Quakers, Noah Wagster scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning. The Quakers put two on base to begin the sixth inning, and Roether brought both of them home on a single through the left side. Noah Rosato capped off the inning by putting a ball in play in the infield to score a run and bring the score to 4-4. 

Heidelberg scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning with two hits and two runners left on base. Earlham responded in the top of the eighth with two runs scored on one hit. The Quakers got two free bases, and scored a run off of a wild pitch. 

Heidelberg scored the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning after a series of two hits and two errors brought the leadoff batter around. 

The Quakers continue play in Florida tomorrow at noon against Centenary University.
