Baseball drops series at Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team dropped the final game of its weekend series at Manchester University 8-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Hayden Scalf started off the day on the mound, and tossed 4.1 innings with three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Garret Odey threw 4.1 innings with three earned runs and two strikeouts. 

On offense, Mitchell Roether went 3-3 with four RBI, two runs scored and two home runs. Noah Rosato scored two hits with one RBI and one run scored. Sean Jeffries hit a double, and scored two runs with one RBI. 

The Spartans took the lead on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning. Roether struck back in the top of the second with a solo shot to right field. 

The next score came in the top of the fifth inning with a homer to center field off Roether's bat for three runs. Noah Wagster put a ball in play in the infield to bring home Rosato for a 5-1 Quaker lead. 

Manchester put up five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, including a pair of doubles to left field. 

Reece Zonts hit a two-out single in the top of the sixth, and came straight home on a double by Jeffries. Roether was intentionally walked after hitting two homers, and Rosato brought in a run with a single to right. 

Trailing 7-6 entering the ninth inning, Manchester scored two runs on three two-out hits in the bottom of the frame to win. 

The Quakers travel to Wabash College for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 4 pm, and host Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at 5 pm in Sadler Stadium. HCAC action continues on Saturday against Franklin College in Richmond with a three-game weekend series.
