RICHMOND, Ind. — Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Earlham College sophomore
Brendon Gibson scored a walk-off run on an errant throw to take the series win over Bluffton University.
Gibson entered as a pinch runner for
Noah Rosato, who reached on a one-out walk.
Noah Wagster then earned a free base on a hit by pitch for two runners on with one out, and the Beavers made a call to their bullpen for the fifth different pitcher of the evening.
Facing his first batter, the Bluffton pitcher tried to corral Wagster back to first base, but hit the Quaker infielder, which sent the ball rolling along the right-side fence. Gibson rounded third, and beat out the throw at home with contact at the plate with the Bluffton catcher.
Christopher Snider earned the win for Earlham, pitching 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, with no hits and two strikeouts.
Casey Blevins started the game on the mound, and tossed 5.1 innings with two earned runs and one strikeout.
Mitchell Roether led the Quakers at the plate with two hits, including a double, and run scored.
Leading 2-1 in the top of the eighth, Bluffton plated three runs, all unearned, on two hits. Snider entered the game with two outs and a loaded set of bases, and escaped the jam with a flyout to center field. The Quakers responded with a four-run eighth inning to tie the game at five.
Earlham earned four free bases in the inning, and scored two runs by way of HBP.
Sean Jeffries led off the inning getting hit by a pitch, and was also the final out of the frame.
Earlham hosts Anderson University for a doubleheader in Sadler Stadium on Saturday to continue HCAC action. On Sunday, the Quakers visit Transylvania University for a doubleheader at the Pioneers.
