Baseball splits with Franklin on Saturday

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team split a doubleheader at Franklin College on Saturday afternoon. 

GAME ONE: EARLHAM 8 FRANKLIN 11

Kyle Jeffries opened the game on the mound with four innings, five earned runs and five strikeouts. Braeden Lewis allowed one earned run on one hit over 3.1 innings.

Dylan Rieck went 2-3 with two runs scored and one RBI on a home run. Noah Rosato went 2-5 with two doubles. 

Leading 3-0, Franklin put together a four-run fifth inning after two hits and two errors. With the Grizzlies up 7-0 in the seventh, the Quakers earned five straight walks to get two runs across. Jackson McFarland then plated a third run on a sacrifice fly. 

Rosato led off the eighth inning with a double to left field, and came home on a fly ball by Jonathan Jimenez. The Grizzlies scored on a pair of two-run hits in the bottom of the inning to lead 11-4. 

Rieck hit a home run to left field to open the ninth inning, and three straight errors scored Chris Barnett. Mitchell Roether scored an RBI with a single to right field, and McFarland came home on a wild pitch all before the first out of the inning was recorded. The Grizzlies ended the game on three strikeouts with a runner on base. 

GAME TWO: EARLHAM 16 FRANKLIN 7

Casey Blevins earned his second win of the season after starting on the mound with four earned runs and two strikeouts. Garret Odey pitched four innings with two earned runs, and Hayden Scalf tossed the final 1.1.

Barnett scored three hits in game two with three runs scored and a double. Sean Jeffries also hit three times with two doubles and two runs scored. 

The Grizzlies got up early with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning, but the Quakers responded in the top of the second with three runs on two hits.

Evan Duncan put a ball in play in the top of the third to score Jimenez after an error by the Franklin shortstop before a solo homer by the Grizzlies in the bottom of the frame. 

Mitchell Roether hit a home run to center field to kick off a five-run fourth inning, with a three-run double by Barnett later in the frame. The freshman then scored on a passed ball. 

Rieck earned an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, and the Quakers piled on four runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning. 

Leading 14-7, Austin Dick laced a double to right field for an RBI in the top of the ninth inning, with Barnett plating a run on a groundout. 

Earlham will take on Franklin tomorrow in a series finale at 12 pm.
