RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College softball team split a doubleheader with Wittenberg University on Tuesday in Ellie Bewley Stadium.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 2 WITTENBERG 5
Kamdyn DePew started game one, and threw six innings with three earned runs and one strikeout.
Mikala Newland closed out the final inning with three straight outs.
Mack Harvey went 3-3 with a double and a run scored.
Bo Shelton also scored three hits with a double and an RBI.
Wittenberg scored two runs on four hits in the top of the first inning, but the Quakers responded with a run in the bottom of the frame after an RBI by
Shelby Hill.
The Quakers tied the game in the bottom of the third inning after a pair of doubles by Harvey and Shelton.
The Tigers scored one run on one hit in the top of the fifth inning, and two runs on one hit and an error in the top of the sixth inning.
As a team, the Quakers left 10 runners on base after outhitting the Tigers 9-7.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 6 WITTENBERG 3
Shelby Messer continued to impress in the circle, tossing a complete game with two earned runs and five strikeouts.
Emmerie Stump scored two hits with a double, one run and one RBI.
Macie Ferguson went 2-2 with two runs scored.
The Tigers tallied one run on no hits in the top of the first inning after a fielding error by the Quakers. Ferguson then set up redemption with a leadoff single, and Shelton fired her fifth home run of the season for a 2-1 lead. Stump and
Malaya Tanglao recorded back-to-back hits, and
Ariel Clarkston added two runs with a single up the middle.
Alana Smith earned the final RBI of the inning with a double to bring Clarkston home.
After batting around the order in the first inning, Earlham scored one run on two hits, including an RBI-double by Stump, in the bottom of the second.
Wittenberg threatened in the top of the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out, but Messer got out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout to end the frame.
The Tigers plated two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning. The guests then put their first three batters on base in the seventh, but Messer pitched three straight outs to earn the win.
Earlham will host Transylvania University on Saturday for an HCAC doubleheader at 1 pm in Ellie Bewley Stadium.
