BARTOW, Fla. – The Earlham College softball team dropped two games to open its Spring Break trip on Monday morning.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 10 DESALES 12 (8 Innings)
Tatum Rickert started the game, and allowed one earned run on one hit with a strikeout through 1.2 innings.
Shelby Messer recorded two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work, and
Morgan Cooksey ended the day in the circle with zero earned runs and one strikeout through 2.2 innings.
Emmerie Stump hit her first home run of the season, and went 2-4 with five RBI and three runs scored.
Jade Green went 3-5 with two runs and a steal.
Bo Shelton hit a triple into the left-center gap to bring Stump home and kick off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. The Quakers added another run off of a walk after loading the bases with two outs.
DeSales plated six runs on two hits in the top of the second inning, with only one run earned after a fielding error by the Quaker infield.
Trailing 6-2, Earlham scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Green led off the frame with a four-pitch walk, and earned a single as the last batter of the inning. After Stump's homer,
Michaela King ended an eight-pitch at-bat with a two-run single to take the lead.
DeSales quickly retook the lead, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. Shelton ended the spree of three straight RBI-hits with an unassisted double play at shortstop.
Bella Schatko reached on a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth inning, and came home on a two-out, two-run single by Stump to give the Quakers a 10-9 lead. DeSales then put their leadoff batter on third after a single and error, and tied the game on a single.
Tied in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Mikala Newland came in as a pinch runner and stole third base. Newland then came home on an infield hit by King, but was called out on a close play at the plate in what would have been the winning run.
In the top of the eighth inning, DeSales scored its free runner, and plated one more run on an outfield error.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 4 THOMAS 9
Kamdyn DePew started in the circle, and threw 5.2 innings with seven earned runs on eight hits and three strikeouts.
Macie Ferguson went 2-3 with a run scored and a steal.
Drew Tubesing went 1-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
After a scoreless first inning, Thomas plated five runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning. The Terriers also added two runs on one hit and two errors in the bottom of the third inning.
After Ferguson led off the top of the fifth inning with a single, Tubesing knocked a double to deep left field for a run.
Faith Butler put a ball in play with two outs, and reached on an infield error that brought home two more runs. The Quakers ended the inning with four runs on three hits and two errors.
Thomas ended the game with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Earlham takes on Kean University, and has a rematch with DeSales tomorrow evening.
