RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team scored a pair of wins over Berea College on Saturday in Sadler Stadium.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 10 BEREA 1
Kyle Jeffries pitched six innings with one earned run on four hits while scoring six strikeouts.
Hayden Scalf earned his first save of the season with three innings pitched in relief, allowing just two hits with one strikeout.
Austin Dick went 3-4 with four steals, two runs scored and one RBI.
Mitchell Roether went 3-1 with a home run, two RBI and a walk.
Noah Rosato scored two hits with one run.
Chris Barnett went 2-3 with a steal and a run scored.
Roether hit a two-out home run over the Maroon Monster to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Earlham plated another run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI-single by Dick.
Sean Jeffries reached as the leadoff batter in the third inning, and advanced to third after an errant throw while stealing second. Roether then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Jeffries with one out.
Trailing 3-0, Berea scored a run after a leadoff walk in the top of the sixth inning.
Jackson McFarland led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to right field to take a 4-1 lead over the Mountaineers. The Quakers then scored a fifth run after Barnett stole second and drew an errant throw by the catcher.
Leading 5-1, Earlham scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. McFarland led off the frame with a walk, and the first run came home on a two-run single by
Noah Wagster. Barnett hit an RBI-single to left field, and Jeffries brought in a run on an infield groundout. Leading 9-1, Barnett scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the game.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 20 BEREA 0
Casey Blevins led off the shutout with five clean innings with three hits and five strikeouts.
Nick Sullivan posted a clean sixth inning, and
Jack Briney allowed one hit with one strikeout in the seventh.
Wagster was 3-3 with a home run, three runs scored and five RBI. Jeffries was 2-2 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI.
Jonathan Jimenez was 1-1 with two runs scored, two RBI and a steal.
The Quakers batted around the order twice in a 16-run first inning with six hits and 12 free bases. Jeffries hit a leadoff single to center field, and stole second before scoring on a single by Jimenez. Rosato hit an RBI single with one out, and
Max Firestine earned an RBI with a hit-by-pitch with two outs and the bases loaded. Barnett brought a run in with a walk before Jeffries hit a two-run double down the left field line. Four straight batters earned a free base before Wagster laced a two-run single to left field. The Mountaineers then placed five straight Quakers on base with either a walk or hit-by-pitch to score four runs. 14 of the runs in the inning came with two outs.
McFarland was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the second inning, and Wagster hit a three-run home run with no outs for a 19-0 lead. The Quakers then loaded the bases again, and
Cooper Steckel got his first RBI of the season on a walk.
21 Quakers had a plate appearance in the game, and 15 reached base safely.
Earlham hosts Berea for the series finale tomorrow at 12 pm in Sadler Stadium.
