ANGOLA, Ind. – The Earlham College softball team opened the Angola Regional with a 10-2 loss to Trine University on Thursday.
Morgan Cooksey opened the game in the circle, tossing 2.2 innings with six earned runs on five hits.
Shelby Messer tallied two innings with four earned runs on five hits.
Offensively,
Shelby Hill led the Quakers with two hits.
Drew Tubesing came in for a pinch-hit double in the fifth inning for an RBI.
The Thunder took the lead on a solo home run in the first inning, and added a run on a sacrifice fly in the second. The hosts scored four runs on two hits in the bottom of the third to take a 6–0 lead.
Messer stranded two runners on base in the top of the fourth after a hit and a pair of walks, and the Quakers rallied in the top of the fifth.
Ashley Lewis led off the inning with a first-pitch single, and advanced on a single by
Malaya Tanglao.
Cierra James advanced the runners, and
Mack Harvey brought in a run with an RBI-groundout. Tubesing then hit her RBI-double for a 6-2 score before a flyout ended the inning.
The Thunder then scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game.
"Today was a learning moment for us" Said Head Coach
Stacey Goyette. "I think the moment was bigger than what we are used to, so great. We learned about it, and we'll take this experience into the future". "Tomorrow is a new day, and this team has been resilient. We take those learning moments and move the needle for the next day, next series, next game. So we'll take this game and file it away, learn from it and move on".
The Quakers continue the tournament tomorrow with an elimination game against University of Rochester at 1:30 pm in Angola. If victorious, the Quakers will play the loser of Trine and Loras at 4 pm in Angola to conclude the day's activities. The Regional final is set for Saturday at 11 am.
