Gage Leads Quakers to Win over Transylvania

RICHMOND, Ind. Cassie Gage worked her way up in the Earlham College field hockey record book Saturday afternoon as she led the Quakers to a 5-1 win over Transylvania University on Comstock Field.

Gage scored three goals in a match for the third time in her career as she moved into a tie for second place all-time in goals and points. She also scored three times last season against St. Vincent College and against Transylvania in 2007.

In her career, Gage has 29 goals, which equaled the total for Melissa Muller (1991-94). Gage has 70 points to tie Gina Reif (1990-92). Martha Kerrick (1983-86) holds both of the all-time marks with 42 goals and 89 points.

On Saturday, Christine Ferguson got the scoring started for the Quakers as she got a penalty stroke by Transylvania at 11:00 for her second score of the season.

Nicole VanScyoc found the goal for the first time this fall to make it 2-0 at 16:18. Gage followed with her first score at 31:18 to give the Quakers a 3-0 advantage at intermission.

In the second half, Gage scored unassisted goals at 53:58 and 55:43 as the Quakers put the contest out of reach. Gage now has six goals this season. Transylvania (0-4) scored its goal at 66:57.

The Quakers led 15-5 in shots and 10-7 in penalty corners. Earlham goalkeeper Emma Treece had three saves.

Earlham (3-3) returns to action on Tuesday at Wittenberg University. The North Coast Athletic Conference match gets underway at 5 p.m.
