OBERLIN, Ohio — A difficult second half was the difference on Saturday afternoon as the Earlham College field hockey team fell 6-3 to Oberlin College.
With the score tied 3-3 at halftime, Oberlin scored three times to come away with the North Coast Athletic Conference victory.
“I thought our team played really well in the first half,” Earlham Head Coach Jill Butcher said. “We pressured Oberlin's defensive and challenged them in every way.”
“I was a little disappointed in the second half,” Butcher added. “I felt like we were not hungry enough after Oberlin scored.”
Oberlin led 2-0 in the opening period before the Quakers rallied behind
Kate Birdsall (Georgetown, ME, Morse ).
Birdsall scored twice to tie the match in the first half on unassisted goals from the right side. Birdsall now leads the Quakers with five goals this season.
Later in the period,
Rhea Bovee (Lindhurst, IL, Lake Forest) gave the Quakers a 3-2 lead as she scored off a penalty corner with an assist from
Diana Ainembabazi (Kampala, Uganda, Li Po Chun UWC).
Unfortunately for the Quakers, Oberlin tied the match just before intermission to set up the second half.
Emma Treece (Kettering, OH, Kettering Fairmont) had 14 saves for the Quakers.
Katy Rockefeller (Greenland, NH, Portsmouth) had a defensive save.
Earlham (2-8, 0-7) is at Denison University on Tuesday. The NCAC match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
