RICHMOND, Ind. — The
Earlham College baseball team opened its home schedule on Saturday with a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against
Wittenberg University.
The Tigers won the first contest 15-4 at McBride Stadium and took the second game 9-4.
In the opener, the Tigers scored three runs in the first and four more in the second to take a 7-0 advantage.
Earlham got on the scoreboard with a RBI double from
Corey Murray.
The Tigers added another tally to make it 8-1 in the fourth before the Quakers rallied to close the gap.
Nate Reynolds and
Chris Baumann each knocked in a run with a single.
Murray's home run for the Quakers in the fifth made it 8-4.
Unfortunately for the Quakers,
Wittenberg scored seven times over the next two frames to put the game away.
Baumann and Murray led the Quakers with two hits apiece.
Adam Painter (1-2), who worked five innings on the mound for the Quakers, suffered the loss.
Game Two
Both teams scored a run in the first inning of the second contest.
Andrew Morrical tied the game with a homer in the bottom of the frame.
In the second, the Tigers scored five times and added another in the third to take a 7-1 lead.
Earlham responded in the fourth with an unearned run.
Jake Carr had a RBI triple to score a run in the fifth. Carr then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Murray to make it 7-4.
The Quakers threatened in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and third, but they could not take advantage of the situation.
Wittenberg added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to widen its margin.
Morrical, Carr,
Tyler Schroeder and
Conner Gable had two hits each for the Quakers.
Shawn Kinnett (0-3) went six innings for the Quakers and took the loss.
Closing In On Record
On the day, Carr had three hits to give him 153 in his career and he is two away from becoming Earlham's all-time leader (since 1974). Eric Strugeon (2005-08) is currently on top with 154.
Earlham (1-8, 0-2) faces the Tigers (6-4, 2-0) in another twinbill on Sunday. The first game now gets underway at noon. It was originally scheduled for one hour later.
