RICHMOND, Ind. — The
Earlham College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to
Wabash College on Saturday at McBride Stadium.
The Little Giants won the first game of the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division series 8-5 and took the second contest 20-8.
A highlight from the day's action for the Quakers was
Jake Carr reaching the top of Earlham's all-time RBI list. Carr had a single to knock in the 93rd run of his career in the first inning of the second game to break the mark once held by Bobby Ebright (1995-97).
In the opener, the Quakers jumped out to an early advantage.
Andrew Morrical and
Tyler Schroeder began the frame with singles. Carr moved both runners one base with a sacrifice bunt.
After
Chris Baumann fouled out,
Corey Murray singled to bring home two runs.
Earlham added two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Murray's RBI single made it 3-0 before Conner Gable gave the Quakers a 4-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.
Wabash (14-14, 7-1) responded in the fourth with four runs to tie the contest. The Little Giants then scored another run in the sixth and added three more in the seventh to lead 8-4.
The Quakers rallied in the bottom of the seventh, but came up short.
Chris Tillery got the inning started with a single with one out. Morrical reached on an error before Schroeder doubled to drive in Tillery. Unfortunately for the Quakers, Morrical was thrown out at the plate on the play.
After Carr was hit by a pitch, Baumann stepped into the batter's box as the tying run. Baumann hit into a fielder's choice, which produced the last out of the contest.
Adam Painter (4-4) worked six innings for the Quakers before being relieved by
Shawn Kinnett in the seventh. Painter gave up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits with four walks and one strikeout. Kinnett surrendered an unearned run on two hits.
Schroeder and Murray led the Quakers with two hits each.
