Quakers Fall in Doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, OhioThe Earlham College baseball team fell twice on Friday in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Bishops won the opener 4-0 before taking the second contest 5-3.

Chris Baumann led off the first contest with a single against Ohio Wesleyan starter Matthew Struble (2-3), which turned out to be the only hit of the game for the Quakers.

Andrew Morrical walked later in the first as Earlham threatened with runners reaching second and third in the frame, but the Quakers couldn't score.

The Quakers had one base runner in the second inning and another in the fourth, who reached on errors, but that was all of the offense the Quakers could put together against Struble. He went seven innings and gave up one hit with five strikeouts.

Conner Gable (0-2) pitched to one batter in the sixth inning for the Quakers before giving way to Justin Broach. Gable worked five innings, giving up three runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Broach went one inning and gave up a run, a hit and a walk.

The Bishops scored once in the first and led 2-0 after four innings. They finished the scoring with a pair of runs in the sixth.

In the second game, Ohio Wesleyan grabbed an early advantage with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Earlham picked up its initial runs of the day with two in the third frame. Nate Reynolds reached on an error and Baumann followed with a single, which was his third hit of the day. Tyler Schroeder hit into a fielder's choice and all runners were safe as the Quakers loaded the bases.

Reynolds then scored on a wild pitch as the other two runners advanced a base. Jake Carr grounded out to produce a run to make it 3-2. It was the 90th RBI of Carr's career and he is two away from tying Bobby Ebright (1995-1997) on the top of the Earlham all-time RBI list at 92.

Ohio Wesleyan added two more runs in the fifth to lead 5-2. The Quakers scored the final tally of the game when Adam Painter reached base on an error that allowed Morrical to come home from second base.

Corey Murray (0-2) went the distance on the mound for the Quakers. He surrendered five runs on six hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.

The Quakers (4-13, 1-7) face Ohio Wesleyan (8-12, 3-3) on Saturday in another twinbill that will wrap up the NCAC West Division series in Delaware. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
