CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Earlham College women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday.
The Quakers beat Mount St. Joseph 5-0 in the first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match of the day before falling 5-4 to Manchester College.
Earlham won all three doubles contests against Mount St. Joseph with
Alex Softness (Atlanta, GA, Paideia School) and
Nora Mineva (Pleven, Bulgaria, Lester B. Pearson) winning 8-3 over Judy Frey and Kelsey Donovan at No. 1, while
Rebecca Ogle (Indianapolis, IN, Brebeuf) and
Olivia Engle (Richmond, IN, Richmond) picked up an 8-4 victory over Brittany Teagle and Lauren McDonald at No. 2.
Bailey Hall (Muncie, IN, Central) and
Cory Mathieu (Madison, WI, West) won 8-4 over Dallas Harris and Carolyn Biedenharn at No. 3.
“It was great to see the doubles finally come together,” Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. “We have been working really hard in that area and it paid off today.”
The match was played to decision, so when Engle (No. 2) and Hall (No. 6) won in singles the contest ended. Engle won 6-0, 6-0 over Donovan, while Hall beat Biedenharn 6-1, 6-2.
Against Manchester, all three doubles teams were again victorious. Softness and Mineva defeated April Erxleben 8-6. Ogle and Engle teamed to beat Alli Heeter and Alyssa Dibley 8-1, while Hall and Mathieu finished off Brandy Leeper and Emily Vail 8-6.
Softness posted Earlham's only win in singles with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 decision over Dibley.
The Quakers (3-7) have one match remaining in the regular season against Sinclair. That contest was postponed earlier this week and has not been rescheduled.
