GRANVILLE, Ohio — Karman Duchon had a record-setting day for the
Earlham College women's soccer team as she established several new standards for the program on Wednesday, while leading the Quakers to a 6-4 win at No. 18 Denison University.
Duchon scored five goals to set a new all-time mark for a match breaking the old record of four that she held along with current assistant coach Hillary Carter and former player Shoshana Erickson. The five goals also put her in the record book for points in a contest with 10.
Erickson scored four times against
Hiram College in 2000, while Carter did it against
Anderson University and Hiram in 2005. Duchon accomplished her mark in 2008 against
Anderson when she set the record for points in a contest with nine. She also is on top of the all-time list with 42 goals, 26 assists and 110 points.
On Wednesday, Duchon stunned the Big Red (2-1-1) with her first goal 15 seconds into the non-conference match.
Denison, which was the pre-season favorite in the North Coast Athletic Conference, tied the contest 1-1 by intermission to set the stage for a high-scoring second period.
In the second half,
Joy Doucette scored to give Earlham a 2-1 lead at 48:31 with an assist from
Lauren Berry.
Denison bounced back to tie the match at 2-2 at 53:27.
Duchon got back on the scoreboard to make it 3-2 at 62:28. Moments later the Big Red tied the match again at 3-3.
Duchon opened up the match with three goals in a row at 67:24, 68:14 and 77:13 to put the Quakers on top 6-3. Doucette was credited with an assist on the first of the scores.
Denison added a goal to make the match closer at 84:42.
Denison had a 21-14 advantage in shots, but the Quakers held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Earlham goalkeeper
Megan Holthaus had five saves.
Earlham (2-1) is on a two-match winning streak as the Quakers travel to
Carnegie-Mellon University on Saturday. The non-conference contest gets underway at 11 a.m.
