DAYTON, Ohio — The Earlham College men's tennis team picked up its second win in a row on Saturday in a 5-4 decision over Otterbein University at the Dayton Center Courts.
The Quakers fell behind 1-2 after the doubles competition before putting together a rally to post four wins in singles to take the non-conference contest.
Scott Lawrence (Letchworth, England, Cheam) and
Mike Von Vogt (South Bristol, ME, Lincoln Academy) defeated Ryan Roberts and Ryan Shutt 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
"Unfortunately, we found ourselves in a hole again down 2-1 after doubles, but we had some fight in us to come back and win four of the singles matches to get the win," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "It was a good win and hopefully one that we can take a lot from."
In singles, Von Vogt's win made the difference as he fought off four match points in the second set to claim a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Shutt at No. 4.
"Mike showed a huge heart as our lone senior battling down match points to win his set and clinching the match for us," Van Zee said. "I am happy with how we played overall, but there is still some room for improvement especially on our doubles."
The other winners for the Quakers were
Henry Levin (Dallas, TX, Highland Park),
Andrey Gavrilov (Yaroslavl, Russia, Universal) and
Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys).
Levin beat Steven Albert 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1, while Gavrilov won 6-3, 6-1 over Tyler Brodhead at No. 2. Maisey earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Philipp Caprasse at No. 3.
"We will have to be on top of our game, if we want a shot at beating Wabash," Van Zee said.
Earlham (3-1) visits Wabash College on Wednesday. The non-conference affair gets underway at 4:30 p.m.
