Quakers Start Season with Victory at Centre

Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. — A pair of runs in the first inning was all pitcher Adam Painter would need on Sunday as the Earlham College baseball team opened the season with a 2-0 win at Centre College.

"It was a very good win," Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits said. "We did some decent things and our young kids got hits early in the game. We're proud of what we've done so far, but we've got a lot more work to do."

Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN, Snider) blanked the Colonels (1-5) for eight innings to post the 13th victory of his career, which ties the Earlham record for wins.

"Painter did a good job of establishing the strike zone," Sakosits said.

Mark Thompson (1994-1997) and Randy Sadler (1971-1973) also have 13 wins for Earlham.

Justin Broach (Centerville, OH, Centerville) picked up his first career save, after entering the contest with runners on second and third with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth.

"Coming into that situation, Broach did a great job," Sakosits said. "He showed a lot of guts."

Painter (1-0) was credited with eight innings on the mound as he gave up six hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. Painter now has 134 strikeouts in his career, which is third best in Earlham history (since 1974). Dave Luptak (2001-2004) tops the list with 140 with James Plyley (2001-2004) next at 137. Painter and Thompson have 134 each.

Broach got all three outs in the ninth with one strikeout to preserve Earlham's season-opening victory.

Tyler Schroeder (Richmond, IN, Richmond) led off the game with a single. After Taylor Gibson (Cumberland, IN, Mt. Vernon) lined out, Logan Kunkel (Oxford, OH, Talawanda) singled to put runners at first and third.

Ted Williams (Harper Woods, MI, Grosse Pointe North) followed with a run-scoring single that moved Kunkel to third. The Quakers then tried to execute a double steal.

Williams stopped between first and second, which allowed Kunkel to race home with the second run of the frame to give the Quakers a 2-0 advantage. Williams finished the play back at first base.

From that point, the Quakers had just three more hits. Williams had a fourth-inning single, while Ross Yoho singled in the seventh. Gibson had a single in the eighth.

Earlham (1-0) returns to action on Saturday at Berea College. The first game of the doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m.
