TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College men's tennis team opened its the spring season on Saturday with a 5-4 loss at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Henry Levin (Dallas, TX, Highland Park) and
Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys) teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match. In singles, Earlham's winners were Levin (No. 1),
Andrey Gavrilov (Yaroslavl, Russia, Universal) (No. 2) and Maisey (No. 3).
"It was a disappointing loss," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "We knew that doubles would be our Achilles' heel and being down 2-1 after that put us in a pretty big hole."
Levin and Maisey defeated Ben Paras and Dallas Burton 8-6 for the only Earlham win in doubles.
In singles, Levin beat Paras 6-3, 6-1, while Gavrilov defeated David Becerra 6-2, 6-1. Maisey won 6-1, 6-3 over Alex Gumz.
The Quakers (1-1, 0-1) face Franklin on Sunday in Terre Haute. The HCAC match starts at 8 a.m.
