EC Blanks Principia

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Earlham College men's tennis team seems to enjoy playing in Florida as the Quakers swept Principia College 9-0 on Tuesday.

It was the second straight win for the Quakers.

"This is the first time this season we have been able to be ahead after doubles," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "That momentum carried us through the singles matches."

Henry Levin (Dallas, TX, Highland Park) and Nabil Parkar (London, England, International) beat Weston Kalogeridis and Kevin Hagenlocher 8-4 at No. 1, while Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys) and Mike Von Vogt (South Bristol, ME, Lincoln Academy) took care of Todd Zimmerman and Brian Wold at No. 2 by an 8-1 count.

Scott Lawrence (Letchworth, England, Cheam) and Andrey Gavrilov (Yaroslavl, Russia, Universal) won 8-2 over Scott Ross and Ben Black at No. 3.

"The doubles sweep was huge," Van Zee said. "If we can continue to improve in that area, we are very dangerous."

In singles action, Levin blanked Kalogeridis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. Gavrilov posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hagenlocher at No. 2.

At No. 3, Maisey defeated Zimmerman 6-2, 6-2, while Lawrence beat Ross 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.

Von Vogt grabbed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Black at No. 5. Johnny Kauffman beat Wold 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6. In an exhibition contest, George Bouchard (Glen Ellyn, IL, Glenbard South) beat Alex Clapp 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4).

"Hank looked great in his singles match and Scott has stepped his game up to another level to stay on a roll," Van Zee said. "We are hoping to bring a lot of intensity for Wednesday's match and finish the break undefeated."

The Quakers (5-2) face Knox College on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.
